Day 5 was an easy one, so don't get too pumped for something incredible today :) We left the hotel today around 9am, and headed to the Jinsha Site Museum. This museum what all about ancient Chengdu, and what I found MOST interesting about it was that there was a real excavation site for ancient relics already created, and the museum was actually built around that excavation site. Very cool. See that big medallion we're all standing in front of in the picture below? It's actually symbolic (go figure!). In ancient Chengdu, people saw the sun rising in the East, and setting in the West, but didn't understand how the sun could fly like that without wings. So, they theorized that birds carried the sun across the sky. The sun on the medallion has 12 points to symbolize 12 months in a year, and there are 4 birds surrounding it to symbolize the 4 seasons (we're blocking the 4th bird in the pic). FUN FACT! |
After the museum, we had lunch and headed over to the Chengdu airport, Beijing bound! It was a short, 2 1/2 hour plane ride with a crappy movie spoken in Mandarian on the TV screen and my seat neighbor was throwing up his insides for about 1/2 the trip. Super fun. No complaints. For dinner, we went to TGI FRIDAYS. WE WERE FREAKING OUT. IT WAS SO EXCITING. It was Daksh's 17th birthday today, so we all prepared a little birthday celebration at dinner, airport-bought presents included. I wolfed down an entire cheeseburger with french fries, no regrets, except for an unexpected tummy ache afterwards. Guess I'm not too used to "traditional American cuisine" right now :P |
This nice and easy day ended with a spontaneous stop at the Crows Nest, the location of the 2008 Olympics! We had some extra time after dinner, so why not? Totally awesome. That just about ends day 5. Hope all is well back home. Love you all!
